hey guys i was wondering if you could help me a bit. i did one of those rite aid payless blood pressure tests yesterday and found that my systolic pressure is 161 and I hear that is pretty bad.
Has anyone done any research on systolic pressure; I mean could that number be pretty normal for me but not someone else? I'm really fit and exercise and all that but my diet could use some work. I'm just wondering if 161 calls for a doctor's visit.
Anyone?

Re: Systolic pressure
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 8:36 PMIt's not the worst, but since you are just 25, it may very well be worth the visit to the doctor, before there is much damage. When I say damage, much of it doesn't go away when ignored. Blood pressure invariably goes up as you get older.
You might also look at what you are doing now. If you smoke, quitting will drop your blood pressure in no time. Ten years ago, I used to smoke, so I know from personal experience that really does change it fast. I had a higher weight at one time, and when I lost about 30 pounds, my blood pressure when down also.
Your doctor, should give you guidance as to what you should consider.
Some things to think about in regards to weight. Your body probably used 4000 calories a day as a teenager, and is at a point were it is diving to about 2000 calories a day. Thats why a lot of people tend to gain weight as they get older. for every 3500 calories that you take in over what you use, you will gain one pound. Similarly If you use 3500 calories more than you take in, you loose one pound. So you might start to examine were to cut caloric corners. Think of calories as money that must be spent, and avoid earning. It does add up. For example switching to diet coke from regular coke may keep about 160 calories out of your body for each one you would have drank.
